Let’s Get Potting!
For some people gardening is a hobby and to others it is a passion. Either way, relax and enjoy yourself. Get prepared- gloves, a garden trowel, flower pots, some small stones and a watering can are all that is needed. Only use a pot that has a drain hole in the bottom. Place a few small stones or make some small pieces from an old cracked clay pot that needs to be re-potted. The idea is to cover the drain hole so the soil doesn’t clog the holes and impede good drainage - this is important so your roots don’t rot. Remember -“Healthy roots make healthy Plants”

New Plants
Add enough Potting Soil so the plant sits at the right level. Make sure there is material below and on all sides of the plant but be careful not to mound it too high around the main stem. Fill in around the root mass and gently press to remove any air pockets. Water thoroughly enough so it begins to drain out the bottom. Add more potting mix as necessary but don’t pack it down tightly- then re-water.

Re-potting old plants
Select a container one or two sizes larger than the one being replaced. Turn the pot on it’s side and gently pull the base of the stem to release it. If it is stuck try loosening the roots around the edges with your trowel. Once released, loosen the root mass with your fingers and gently spread it apart so it can thrive in the new larger container. Repeat the same steps as described above for new plants and enjoy your plant’s new found vigor!

Container gardens and window boxes
Essentially the same techniques are used for these larger projects but drainage is even more of an issue because there is a larger surface are a being watered and often there is only one drain hole so it gets clogged more easily. Generally speaking, under-watered plants won’t be as susceptible to as wide a variety of pests and disease as over-watered plants, so keep an eye on your soil moisture. Potting Soil retains a tremendous amount of water for its weight (it’s designed to do that) so use your most technologically sophisticated tool of all to test the soil - your finger!
